“In Australia, 1 in 12 girls are sexually abused before they are six years old.”
A recent interview about CONSENT (in response to Saxon Mullins’ 4Corners program) has caused outrage all over social media and media networks in Australia.
The trolling has got soo out-of-hand that the ABC had to take down the full segment of this interview with Co-founder Deanne Carson of Body Safety Australia as it crashed their website with all the vitriol!

This simple interview was all about the teaching of consent and changing our interactions with children which should start from birth. About the setting up the expectations of ‘respect’ and acknowledgment. End of story. However the conversation of this topic has been derailed quite frankly with nonsense. How this went from languaging used with babies and toddlers to a simple topic of ‘Baby Nappy Consent’ if flabbergasting.
Well as you know IntimacyTV is all about controversy and has worked with one of the Co-Founders of Body Safe Australia, Whitney Yip for many years  and aware of their work with children and their parents in creating a safe environment for children.

“1 in 5 children are sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. We work with families and communities to create a culture of consent from birth. Sadly, sometimes changing culture to further empower vulnerable members of the community comes with backlash.”

In support for this snippet we will show you of this interview (as the entire video is unobtainable now) we have attached the OFFICIAL RESPONSE by Deanne and look forward to future work and articles provided to help children and parents navigate these touchy subjects.

Permission for nappy change? Our response.

It all started when …

Our co-founder, Deanne Carson recently appeared on ABC24 in response to Four Corners’ story on rape survivor, Saxon Mullins.
In the full interview, Deanne spoke about ‘creating a culture of consent’ by working with children from three years old and with parents from birth. Her interview was picked up by a  disreputable media outlet, edited out of context and used to silence any conversation about promoting bodily autonomy in children. The edited version has since gone viral and has created confusion for many caring parents.
The Victorian Child Safe Standards ask that we embed an organisational culture of child safety and that we promote the participation and empowerment of children.  Showing respect for a child’s voice during vulnerable moments is at the core of both Child Safe Standard One and Seven.
If members of your community have an questions or concerns about the media coverage, please feel free to direct them to this Snopes entry or the New Matilda article.
Deanne has also published an op-ed on what she meant, and why we so passionately believe it
Sadly, sometimes changing culture to further empower vulnerable members of the community comes with backlash. We thank you for your ongoing support of the smallest members of our community.
Please don’t hesitate to get back to us with any questions!
